The movie Picnic at Hanging Rock is about a girl named Miranda and her friends, Irma, Marion, and Sara. Mrs Appleyard sends the girls on a small trip to Hanging Rock, forbidding any tomfoolery. And what immediately happens? Tomfoolery!
All the girls, except Edith, go missing on the rock, and so a desperate search begins. Only Irma is found, and remembers nothing of the events on the rock.
It turns out that Albert is actually Sara’s brother, Bertie, and you must read the book to understand why Michael keeps seeing swans. Sara is eventually found dead, crashed in the greenhouse, blood spilling from her limp, fish-out-of-the-water mouth. Her fees weren’t paid, and I suspect Mrs Appleyard is behind it all. She also commits suicide.
